History

Pearson exhibited a design for a new house at Crickhowell at the Royal Academy in 1873, where it was described as ‘castellated’ and ‘medieval’. Anthony Quiney suggested that the commission may be identifiable with Maes Celyn, a house built west of Crickhowell at about this time for R. Townley Woodman. He noted, however, that the surviving house is neither castellated nor medieval, although he considered several features, particularly the windows, characteristic of Pearson’s work. Cadw subsequently described Maes Celyn as ‘thought to be by J. L. Pearson’. The identification therefore remains uncertain.
